The Hillary Story

Ed Hillary believed ordinary people can do extraordinary things and that everyone has the power to make a difference.

  • An Ordinary Chap

Ed Hillary believed you don’t have to be a fantastic hero to accomplish great things. You can just be an ordinary chap. But Hillary was far from ordinary.

In 1953 Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mt Everest. Following on from that achievement, Ed headed to the ends of the earth to become the first man to stand at both poles and the summit of Everest.

  • An Ordinary Chap

He didn’t stop there. Hillary raised money for the first school in Nepal’s Khumjung province, then rolled up his sleeves, grabbed his shovel and helped build it too.

In between his international escapades, Hillary shared his passion for adventure with family. Skiing, hiking, mountaineering, white-water rafting and exploring New Zealand with his 6 foot 5 inch frame crammed into his mini with 3 kids in the back and his wife by his side.

  • An Ordinary Chap

Ed Hillary did the near impossible and climbed the world’s highest mountain. Then he did the extraordinary by staying down to earth and committing to a lifetime of supporting others. Many ‘heroic’ deeds are an adrenaline-filled single moment of achievement. Hillary was a hero of ongoing achievements, coupled with an amazing attitude and generosity of spirit.

His remarkable achievements, attitudes and generosity define what it is to be a great Kiwi, and his spirit can inspire the Ed Hillary in all of us to think big.

Giving Back

If there is anything I can do for the Sherpa people, what do you think that would be?

The Sherpa replied, “Our children have eyes but they are blind and can not see. We want you to open their eyes by building a school in our village of Khumjung”

A simple question began a lifetime of giving back for Ed Hillary – and his generosity defined a great legacy of his life.

The Hillary Summit Shout Out

Shout Out an adventure hero…and we’ll shout them $1k.

Ed Hillary knew that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. He knew that everyone has the power to make a difference, and he knew it’s what you do that counts.

That’s why we’ve started the Hillary Summit Shout Out, in honour of Ed’s adventurous spirit and charitable legacy. Read on to learn more and get involved.

What is
the Shout Out?

The Shout Out is a $1,000 grant we award periodically via our Facebook page, to celebrate and reward the everyday legends who show initiative and effort in our adventure sports communities. Every few months we’ll put out a call to find deserving local champions who are putting in the hard yards to help us all get out there adventuring. You nominate them and vote for them on our Facebook page, and we’ll choose who gets a grand in the hand to fuel them on.

Who's your adventure hero?

Volunteers, organisers, passionate adventure-makers… they’re the ones who make great stuff happen – and we reckon they deserve a Shout Out. It might be a dedicated volunteer or active member in your ski, climbing or biking community… Whoever it is that’s helping out in your favourite adventure sport. Check out our Facebook page to see all the amazing nominations we’ve received so far, and who we’ve awarded.

Who will you nominate?

It's easy to get involved:

First, head over to facebook.com/hillaryfoods and like our page to make sure you know when we put out a call for entries. Shout Out runs several times a year. So get thinking about what legends you know in your sporting network? When we call for entries, nominate your chosen legend via our page, then get your friends, team, crew and family to vote for them too.

We select each Shout Out recipient from the top ten most-‘liked’ nominations, so every vote (like) counts – spread the word!

How the Hillary Summit Shout Out works:

  • Look out for our next post on the Hillary Foods Facebook page calling for entries.
  • Comment on our post to nominate someone. Tag them, say why they’re awesome, and tell everyone in your network to vote.
  • Vote by ‘liking’ your or someone else’s comment.
  • We’ll select an adventurous spirit as the winner, from the top 10 most-voted nominations.
  • Each Shout Out recipient will receive $1000 to help fuel their next adventure, along with 3 packs of our Hillary Summit energy cereal for some serious body fuel to keep them going.
